The following is a narration of a dream by a Chilean Machi Medicine Woman and is typical of how Native American Mapuche see Spiritual Systems.
"I dreamt that zumpall (mermaid) gave me clothing, boots, and a coat. There was a car, a Ford, and there was a gringa woman waiting at the car. The mermaid gave me a bouquet of flowers.
Before I got in the car, I was dressed with a tunic like silk. The gringa woman drove the car to the bottom of the ocean and, god was there, who followed me everywhere.
After this dream, god wouldn't let me alone, and I kept having dreams and more dreams and, every once in a while my body would tremble like it does when I take datura for a machitun or when I rub a sick person.
One day the mermaid saw me, but I did not see her. But I felt it in my body. It was so strong that I could not move. The sumpall is a very beautiful mermaid, she has her face painted, and she likes to dance in the water. Two mermaids brought me two saddled horses and they gave me fish. My shamanic power comes from the lake.
The mermaids tell me what herbs to use with my patients in dreams. They name the herbs and they show them to me.
To be a good shaman you need to be prepared. The good shamans are those who learn through dreams and not through others."
